Test the solution on an unobtrusive part of the wall. Another thing to take into consideration is that flat paint does not clean easily. If plain water doesn't work, try adding vinegar to your damp sponge or cloth and gently scrub the walls.

Rub that sponge vertically down the wall, working one section at a time.
